Tom Hansen

Senior Pastor

God has blessed my family with two wonderful congregations since 1991.  I served in Lewiston, Idaho prior to my 2005 arrival in GJ.  I grew up in Southern Cal and went to seminary in Princeton, NJ.  Of all the places I've lived, Colorado is beyond comparison - providing endless beauty and adventure.  Shelly and I met on summer staff at Forest Home (a Christian camp in the mountains of So Cal) and have been married since 1989.  Our four kids are married and we are enjoying the gift of grandchildren as well.  When our youngest son went off to college we became foster parents from 2018-2020. We currently provide respite care for foster families.  We love to hike, dabble in home improvement projects, read, play card & board games, and hang out with family and friends.  As a pastor, I love to come alongside people (wherever they are in their faith journey), provide a place for safe and honest conversations, and help them connect deeply with God, others, needed resources, and themselves.  I have learned much since 2015 (along with many in our church family) about what it means to practice a more emotionally healthy spirituality, and imagine that will continue for years to come.

Josh Mikelson

Associate Pastor

By God’s grace, I have had the privilege of serving congregations in both the United States and the United Kingdom. I was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, and completed my undergraduate studies at Whitworth University. I then attended Princeton Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity. During seminary, I also gained ministry experience through a year-long placement in Scotland.

I was ordained as a Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 2008 and served two years in pastoral ministry in Scotland. After several more years of service to the church in the United States, I met my wife, Heather, who is also a Teaching Elder in the PC(USA). In 2015, we returned to Scotland for eight more years of ministry. During that time, I served as a pastor while also pursuing a PhD in theology, which I completed in 2024. The greatest gift of our years in Scotland, however, was the adoption of our beloved son.

After two years of shared ministry in Washington, we are grateful to call Western Colorado home. Heather now serves as the Executive Presbyter for this presbytery, where her work focuses on presbytery vitality, church renewal, and the development of new worshiping communities. In my own work, I am especially passionate about preaching, pastoral care, and adult Christian education. In my free time, I enjoy time with family and friends, walking our goofy Labrador, hiking, biking, rowing, good coffee and tea, and cheering for the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners. Now that we live in Colorado, we will cheer for the Broncos, too.

Janet Young

Executive Director of Church-wide & Children's Ministries

My husband, John, and I were married in 1983. We began attending First Pres in 1997. In 2005, I accepted a part-time assignment as the Director of Children’s Ministry.  In the years following that initial assignment, my position and responsibilities have grown and I am now the Executive Director of Church-wide and Children’s Ministries. John and I raised two children at First Pres. We know the exhilaration and exhaustion of raising children.  We know that children need spiritual nurture both at home and in the midst of a loving church family. I love the time I spend with children, as they learn to love and follow Jesus.  I love the time I spend with their parents and families. Learning and growing in faith together is always an amazing adventure!

Charity Finnigsmier

Director of Senior Adult Ministry

I have been the Director of Senior Adult Ministries at First Presbyterian Church since 2017. I am married and have two wonderful boys. For as long as I can remember I have worked or volunteered with senior adults and enjoyed every minute of it. The Senior Adult Ministry offers several opportunities for fellowship, growth in faith and service to others. Please visit the SAM ministry page to see where you can get involved and meet others.

Sarah Queen

Director of Student Ministries

I grew up in Grand Junction, then moved away for about six years during college and after. I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have three children. My husband and I own and operate a couple of businesses in the community. We have been attending First Pres since 2008. I have always loved working with youth and youth ministry was an important part of my teens. I began volunteering with the youth at First Pres several years ago and then began working as the interim Director of Student Ministries in March 2021. I accepted the position in January 2022. You can find our family on sports fields and courts for soccer, basketball, and football.

Tasha Haley

Children's Ministry Assistant

I am a wife and mother of 2 young adults. I love to hang with kids and find fun ways to teach them about Jesus while learning alongside them. I coordinate and help teach GRACE Place while also leading the Wednesday Night Live programming.  I am around all summer to help with Sport Camp, VBS and Wacky Wednesdays! Kids bring me joy! When not at church you can find me hanging with my family, hiking/running and cleaning people’s teeth! I have attended FPC for most of my life and am pleased to be a part of this staff!

Josh James

Contemporary Worship Leader

I am a Grand Junction native.  I have led or been a part of a few different worship teams around the valley.  I enjoy writing music and being involved in theatre.  I have written many plays for children and wrote and directed A Christmas Carol: A Musical that was presented in December of 2019.  When not performing or directing, I spend time with my wife and two children.

Chris Carter

Office Manager

Being a wife, mom, grandma, and dog mom to several furry family members brings me so much joy. I feel blessed to be part of this caring church family and love using my creativity to serve our congregation. If we haven't met yet, please stop by and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting you!

Martha James

Financial Manager

We moved to the Grand Valley in 2006 and soon became part of the First Pres family. In 2010, I started working part-time on staff as the Financial Manager.

Gene King

Facilities Manager

I am Gene King, the current Lead Custodian/Grounds/Facilities Manager here at First Presbyterian Church. My wife Susan, our two sons Joshua and Aaron and I have been members of First Pres. for 30+ years. I have been fortunate enough to be the Lead Custodian/Grounds person for First Pres. for 16+ years. Recently my position changed to Lead Custodian/Grounds and Facilities Manager. My current position is integral to the maintenance and cleanliness of the church/Grounds/ Facility of First Presbyterian Church. Please feel free to ask me about my staff position as it does encompass other duties.

Tom Verdieck

Custodian/Groundskeeper

Hi! I’m Tom Verdieck, (a.k.a. Tommy) and I am the church custodian/groundskeeper. I was born and raised in Glenwood Springs, CO. before later moving to Grand Junction. I have been a member of 1st Pres since 1978, back when the church was still located on 6th and White. I met my wife, Sherry, at this church and we’ve been happily married for 52 years. We also have a son, daughter, 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Before working at the church, I served in the Navy for 7.5 years and worked in the maintenance department of School District 51 for 30 years until I ultimately retired. Within the church, I served as an elder twice. I have held my position as custodian/groundskeeper since 2016.

Michael Bell

Worship Planning Assistant/Organist

I began playing the organ for First Presbyterian in 2023. Originally from Pennsylvania, I grew up listening to my grandmother play the organ at a variety of churches and always loved the complexity and large sounds of the instrument.

I studied music education at Temple University’s Boyer School of Music, and I also play the trumpet. Later, I returned to school and earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Bethel University.

My wife, Tabitha, and I have a beautiful son, Isaac, and two dogs. I enjoy classical music, riding my motorcycle, and spending time with my family.

Emily Grady

Missions and Outreach Assistant

I'm Emily Grady, I am the Mission and Outreach Assistant. I grew up a Pastor's kid at a Presbyterian church in Colorado Springs. For 9 years I served Active Duty in the U.S. Navy and still serve Reserves today. My husband of 5 years, Dylan, and I relocated to Grand Junction in January of 2026 from Virginia Beach. We immediately found a home here at First Presbyterian Church. The opportunity to work here was an answer from God to the question "How can I serve you?" My husband and I are so blessed and can't wait to see what God has in store for us.

Karen Soodsma

Worship Assistant

Hi I’m Karen!  I have lived in Grand Junction for almost 3 years, and I have 3 kids who keep me busy.  After deciding to step away from homeschooling my kids and getting them adjusted to school, I was looking for something I could do outside of the home.  Then the Worship Planning Assistant job became available, and I felt the nudge to apply.  I am very thankful for being part of the workings of FPC and look forward to whatever comes my way next.

In my free time I enjoy exploring the many hiking trails here, perusing farmer’s markets, and chasing my favorite food trucks around town.  I am also a die-hard Colorado Avalanche fan and love watching college Football.
