  • tom hansen

    senior Pastor

God has blessed my family with two wonderful congregations over the last 31 years.  I served in Lewiston, Idaho prior to my 2005 arrival in GJ.  I grew up in Southern Cal and went to seminary in Princeton, NJ.  Of all the places I've lived, Colorado is beyond comparison - providing endless beauty and adventure.  Shelly and I met on summer staff at Forest Home (a Christian camp in the mountains of So Cal) and have been married for 31 years.  We have four adult children, three are married to wonderful spouses.  We also have a grandchild on the way.  Due to a persistent and surprising nudge from God, we have been foster parents twice in the last three years.  We love to hike, dabble in home improvement projects, read, play card & board games, and hang out with family and friends.  As a pastor, I love to come alongside people (wherever they are in their faith journey), provide a place for safe and honest conversations, and help them connect deeply with God, others, needed resources, and themselves.  I have learned much in the last 5-6 years about what that looks like in my own life too, and imagine that will continue for years to come.

  • janet young

    Executive director of church-wide & children's ministries

My husband, John, and I were married in 1983. We began attending First Pres in 1997. In 2005, I accepted a part-time assignment as the Director of Children’s Ministry.  In the years following that initial assignment, my position and responsibilities have grown and I am now the Executive Director of Church-wide and Children’s Ministries. John and I have two grown children, Caitlin and Dylan, and are blessed with two grandsons, Kirby and Everett. John and I know the exhilaration and exhaustion of raising children. We know that children need spiritual nurture both at home and in the midst of a loving church family. I love the time I spend with children, as they learn to love and follow Jesus. I love the time I spend with their parents and families. Learning and growing in faith together is always an amazing adventure!

  • dr. john howard

Director of music & worship arts

My spiritual journey has been shaped and enriched through great sacred music since I was a very small boy. For over twenty years now, I have sought to use the highest quality church music possible as a means of worship, discipleship, outreach and evangelism to "be a repairer of the breach" (as Isaiah describes it). I have been blessed beyond measure to serve in this capacity at First Presbyterian Church since 2014, and I look forward to many more years ahead to see how God will use music to bring Himself glory as He builds His church. If you are also passionate about music, I would love to help you find the perfect place to join our "Music at First" family.

  • debe colby

    director of outreach & mission

I have lived in Grand Junction since 1989 and consider this the most community-minded city I have ever been.  My late husband and I moved here after retiring from our careers at IBM.  I've been at First Pres since 1990 and have worked on staff as Director of Outreach since 2010.  Working with our congregation to reach out and show the love of Christ is an honor that God has given me.  If you have a heart for reaching out to people who have needs, including the need to hear about Jesus, I invite you to contact me either by phone or email.

  • nancy mast

    office manager

Our family has lived in Grand Junction since 2005 and attended First Pres since 2007.  We have three grown children, a son and two daughters.  My degree is in Human Resource Management from Colorado State University.  I spent several years raising our kids and started working for First Pres in 2010 in a part-time role which evolved into full-time.  I have the privilege of being in the front office and interacting with our church family.  We also love our western slope playground that we get to share with friends and family.  Any time that we get to spend with our kids is a treasure. We are frequently out walking our grand puppy, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, trail running, or snowshoeing in God's beautiful creation along with capturing it through a lense.
