Janet Young,
Director of Children's
and Family Ministries
Hello! My name is Janet Young. I am the Director
of Children’s and Family Ministry. My life journey has had some
twists and turns. I graduated from the University of Kansas in 1983
with a degree in journalism. Instead of journalism, I landed in retail
management, spending 13 years with Wal-Mart. After that, I spent 4
years as a stay-at-home mom and 6 years as an elementary school health
assistant. Along the way, my faith journey also took some twists and
turns. As a child, I was raised in the Roman Catholic church,
receiving a foundation of faith that would never leave me. When I hit
college, however, I walked away from church. For several years, I did
not practice my faith, but I realize now that God was always there. It
was only when I had children that I discovered what we were missing. I
knew I wanted them to have the firm foundation that I had been given.
In January of 1997, I walked through the doors of First Presbyterian for the
first time. I was looking for a church that would love and nurture my
children.
As I rediscovered my faith, I also found a calling. In 2005,
I accepted a part-time assignment as the Director of Children’s Ministry. I
love the time I spend with children, as they learn about Jesus. I love the
time I spend with their parents and families. In August of 2007, my
assignment expanded to include family ministry. I can’t wait to see where
God takes me from here.
My husband,
John, and I have been married for almost 25 years. We have two children,
Caitlin (age 15) and Dylan (age 12). We know the exhilaration and exhaustion
of raising children. We know that children need spiritual nurture both at
home and in the midst of a loving church family. We have found First
Presbyterian Church to be a community that supports and encourages us as we
raise our children. It is my hope that you, too, will find First Pres a
great place to worship, to help teach your children and to find fellowship.
I hope you will join us as we follow Christ and share His Word.
